I was lucky to be born and raised right here in Asheville. A product of our local public school system, I graduated high school and went straight into the US Air Force where I trained to become a Weather Observer. My first assignment was at Cape Kennedy where I was a very small part of two Apollo missions, 14 and 15. I spent a year in Thailand during the Viet Nam conflict. After the military, I came back to the mountains and spent four idyllic years in lovely Cullowhee, where I earned a BS degree in Psychology-a great beginning for my later real estate career. After college, I spent several years working in the social work field with school dropouts, handicapped, and other disadvantaged clients.
I was the founding director of MANNA Food Bank, the first food bank in Western North Carolina. After my stint with MANNA, I was part of a cross-country bicycle trip with four other adults and thirty-one high school kids. We started in Long Beach, CA and finished 3600 miles and 56 days later at the Cape Hatteras Light House on the Outer Banks of NC. It was a unique and wonderful experience for all and we raised a ton of money for the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
My real estate career began with a national franchise in 1985. I later moved to the local RE/MAX office and went through four office locations and three franchise owners. RE/MAX was fifteen years of great learning experiences. In 2002, my wife Joy and I, along with partner Lew Bellows, started Town and Mountain Realty. In the beginning, there was only the three of us and four other agents. We now have close to 40 agents and a full support staff. We consider ourselves an independent, boutique agency where our business philosophy is similar to mine back in the social work days; to take very good care of our clients and always follow the Golden Rule. Joy and I became the sole owners of Town and Mountain Realty in 2006 and have consistently provided our agents and clients with solid support and professional service.
I've always believed in continuing education and have worked very hard to learn all I can about the real estate industry and the community I'm part of. I suspect I have more professional designations than any other agent in the Asheville/Buncombe real estate market. I completed my GRI (Graduate Realtors Institute) in 1990, my CRS (Certified Residential Specialist) in 1994, ABR (Accredited Buyer Agent) in 1997, and SRES (Seniors RE Specialist)in 2000. I earned my CRB designation (Certified Real Estate Managing Broker) in 2007. The CRB Designation is recognized throughout the industry as one of the highest levels of professional achievement and a symbol of excellence in brokerage management. As of summer 2008, I am an Environmental Consultant, or ECO Agent. Most folks do not understand what all the initials are about, but professionals in our industry know I have taken time, energy and financial resources to stay current in my profession to better serve my clients. In 1999, I completed the year long Leadership Asheville program.
I have been married to my lovely wife Joy since 1983 and we have two very special daughters. Sophie graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone. She has traveled the world spending 6 months in Latin America and 6 months in Southeast Asia. She saved money learning the real estate business and working for Town and Mountain. Leah graduated from the College of Charleston and worked in tile design in Charleston for 7 years. They have both recently joined my wife and I in the company. We truly are now the Mike Miller Team, and are very excited to be a family business.
